A CHRISTMAS CAROL
ACCORDING TO VEDANTA
Scrooge, the Soul, and the Science of Self-Change
Adam Brady
What This Book Is
“Old Marley was dead as a doornail… This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.” — Charles Dickens
Everyone knows how the story ends. Almost no one asks why it works.
Ebenezer Scrooge goes to bed a miser and wakes up a changed man, in a single night. A Christmas Carol According to Vedanta argues that this is not just a holiday miracle but a precise map of how human beings actually transform. Vedanta, the philosophy at the heart of yoga and much of Eastern thought, has described that map for thousands of years.
Through this lens, Marley’s chains are karma, Scrooge’s counting house is Maya, and the three ghosts are a masterclass in Darshan, the clear seeing that changes a life without force or argument. The book follows Scrooge’s journey beat by beat, then turns the mirror toward the reader.
This is not a book about the holidays. It is a book about the moment a life changes, and how to meet that moment before crisis forces it.
Inside the Book
No prior knowledge of Vedanta is required. Each concept is introduced in plain language and anchored in the scenes you already know.
The book moves through:
A refresher on Dickens’ story and a beginner’s guide to Vedanta
Scrooge’s world through Maya, the illusion that keeps him imprisoned
Marley’s warning, and how the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come each reveal a different dimension of time and self
Scrooge’s Christmas morning awakening, and what it shows about liberation
A closing chapter on why we change too late and how to change sooner, including A Manual for Recovering Scrooges, ten practices for putting the lessons to work
Every chapter includes:
A Vedantic framework (karma, samskara, the gunas, darshan, the koshas, and more) explained through the story
“In Your Life” reflection prompts that turn the teaching personal
Practical insight into why change is so hard, and what makes it possible
A Christmas Carol According to Vedanta is written for fans of Dickens’ immortal classic, for readers drawn to yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, or Eastern philosophy, and for anyone curious about how real, lasting self-change happens, all through a story they already love.
A Note from the Author
“On December 17th, 1984, I sat in front of the television with my family and watched George C. Scott play Ebenezer Scrooge. I was seventeen, and something about that film took hold of me. I watched it dozens of times, long after it stopped being Christmas, until I nearly wore out the videotape.
It took me forty years to understand why. Decades into meditation, yoga, and Vedic study, I rewatched the film and saw that Dickens had written, whether he knew it or not, a story about the same transformation the Vedic sages had been mapping for millennia.
This book is my attempt to share what I saw. If it helps you look at an old story, or your own life, with new eyes, it has done its work.”
